Dental hygiene treatment, known as scaling and polishing, will be carried out by our dental hygienist to remove any plaque that may have built up around the teeth. Plaque is a substance mainly made up of bacteria that feeds on sugar that can come from our diet and subsequently produces acidic waste. This acidic waste can slowly dissolve our teeth contributing tooth decay. It is therefore important to prevent the build up of plaque to avoid this problem and also gum disease.
During the scaling process, our hygienist will use a dental scaler to manually remove plaque and tartar from the teeth. Polishing is then carried out using rubber polisher with a special toothpaste called prophylaxis paste. In some cases, our patients may require scaling around the roots of the teeth if they suffer from periodontal disease; and this is known as root planning. This will most probably require local anaesthetic.
Our hygienists are also happy to help patients understand the importance of oral hygiene:
- Flossing the teeth
- Using interdental brushes
- The best brushing technique
- Foods and drinks that would be best avoided
